Article: The Origin Of Our Pearls

Margarita Bonita

The Origin Of Our Pearls

Hello dear reader. Many of our friends always ask us about our pearls; how they are made and where they come from... On this occasion, I decided to write and tell you everything.

Pearls, a symbol of elegance and nature, have a fascinating formation process that can take up to 20 years. Although in the history of Margarita Island pearls played a fundamental role in the economy and culture, with time the natural conditions changed, leading to a gradual decrease in local production. Today, pearl farming has moved to other regions of the world where the magic of this natural gem is still preserved in a conscious and sustainable way.

The process of cultivating pearls involves introducing a small nucleus, or irritant, into an oyster, which initiates the formation of the layers of mother-of-pearl that eventually form the pearl. This process can take anywhere from 5 to 20 years, depending on the type of oyster and water conditions. It is a process that requires patience and care, as any change in the environment can affect the quality of the pearl.

TARBAY Atelier on Margarita Island

Although we no longer cultivate pearls in Margarita, we keep alive the tradition of using this symbol of the island in our creations. Each pearl that is part of our jewelry is an extension of our mission to honor our roots while adopting responsible and environmentally conscious practices. Every time you wear one of our pieces, you are wearing not just a piece of jewelry, but a story: one that connects centuries of history to the future we are building.
